My training as a Functional Medicine and Integrative Health Coach through the Duke University School of Integrative Medicine's Health Coach training program, the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine and Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA), creates a cache of experience that at this point is quite unique. I am Board Certified through the National Board of Medical Examiners, the first cohort in the US to have this distinction. At this point I have worked with 100's of clients but this isn't where my story begins. Growing up outside of Cleveland we had our struggles as a family, my father had his first heart attack at age 36 and proceeded to live an incredibly unhealthy life from then on. I grew up with a tremendous amount of stress but never recognized this as stress, it was just how life was. I suppose that was my first mission...not to inherit the perceived genetic fate of my father , reduce stress and to make better choices. I completed my Master's degree in Speech Pathology which took me all over the country for the next 5 years from New Orleans, to California, Massachusetts, Connecticut and back to Cleveland to work for the Cleveland Clinic. My work at the clinic included behavior change theory and mindfulness based practices for my clients which was not the norm for most Speech Pathologist's. For the next 25 years I made it my personal mission to seek out the best practices in health and wellness while embarking on a personal journey to live the healthiest most authentic life. As a result those around me frequently asked for advice and guidance in living a healthier more vibrant life, this was my calling. Twenty five years in healthcare as a hospital based speech pathologist set the foundation for a wealth of medical knowledge but it was easy to see that the current system of healthcare was failing, reacting to crisis' like heart attacks or strokes rather than taking a preventative approach. As the years passed it became abundantly clear that this way of thinking was not in alignment with my beliefs and my passion for health and wellbeing. This realization led me to Duke University's outstanding program and eventually to Functional Medicine Coaching Academy and the Cleveland Clinic. Empowering individuals to take control of their own health is the future and I am committed to being part of a better future for my clients and our world.
I am currently maintaining a private practice in health coaching after having left working at the innovative, cutting edge Center For Functional Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic February 2019, as a Functional Medicine Health Coach. In September 2017, I was one of the first group of health coaches in the NATION (click here for more information on why your health coach should be NBC-HWC) to receive National Board Certification as a Health and Wellness Coach through the National Board of Medical Examiners. I participated in the 2017: Health & Wellness Coaches Item Writing Workshop, National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), National Consortium for Credentialing Health & Wellness Coaches (NCCHWC) and International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching (ICHWC), Philadelphia, PA. to be part of the coaching group that had a hand in writing questions for future exams. I am deeply committed to providing the best in Functional Medicine Health Coaching and empowering individuals every day. Find out more here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karen-bush-12812970/
All work no play? No way...the balance that I help others with, I seek in my own life. My life is full…rowing all over the world, practicing and teaching yoga (RYT 200), meditating, biking, hiking, traveling, cooking plant based meals for my family, and maintaining an incredible network of friends and family. Truly enjoying life and working hard is part of my healthy lifestyle. I want that to be yours too.
